Social Security: managing benefits
POA is not enough for Social Security — they have their own system
Who to call
Social Security Administration: 1-800-772-1213 (or the local field office).
Before you call
- Have the beneficiary's Social Security number, date of birth, and address
- Know which bank account benefits are deposited into, if you've found it
- Expect a wait — call early in the morning, early in the week
What to say
“My family member receives Social Security benefits and is currently unable to manage their finances due to hospitalization. I want to understand whether we need a representative payee arrangement, and how to apply.”
“Can you confirm benefits are being deposited normally? Nothing about their condition should interrupt them, but we're verifying every income source.”
Good to know
- The SSA does not honor powers of attorney. If they can't manage benefits long-term, a family member applies to be their "representative payee" — it's an in-person/interview process.
- If they recover capacity, no rep-payee is needed — don't start the process unless doctors expect a long incapacity.
- Benefits keep flowing during hospitalization; the urgent question is only who can manage the money.
